2-1. Response of Muskmelon to different levels of Nitrogen and Potassium fertigation.

Rational

Soil has a lot of associated problems in Oman due to continuous use of same soil for growing vegetables which resulted in build up of soil born diseases and accumulated salts. To avoid such problems, soil less culture technique has been planned for planting tomato.

Objectives

1-To make use of marginal land.

2-To increase water use efficiency

3-To determine optimum yield and quality produce.

4-To estimate cost benefits of cultivation.

 Location

Rumais

Duration

2005-2006

Investigators

Dr Ahmed Toufiq  (ICARDA Expert)

Eng. Muthir Al-Rawahy

Eng. Fatma Al-Raisy

Eng. Salim Al-Makhmmary

Methodology

Variety: Niz 63-803 F1, Sun cherry F1 and others varieties

Media: Water (Hydroponics) in Rumais Experimental design: RCD with 4 replications.

Observations

1-Monitoring EC and pH of the solution.           2-Water requirement.

3-Number of fruits/plot/plant                               4-Fruit weight (yield).

5- Flower number.

2-3: Evaluation of cucumber production in non-cooled greenhouses conditions in collaboration with ICARDA

Rational

Protected Agriculture has become an important issue in the field of agriculture in the region. It gives high productivity and good quality produce but it involves high cost of   materials such as cooling pads, fans, electric costs, water costs for cooling pads thus making high cost of cultivation. As a result the net profit will be drastically reduced.  Hence, non-cooled greenhouse will be tested to lower the cost taking the advantage of climatic variation around the year in comparison with cooled greenhouses.

Objectives

To compare production of cucumber crops in cooled and non-cooled greenhouses using insect proof net.

Location

Rumais and farmers field

Duration

2005-2006

1- EC and pH of the soil and Sand                   2-Water requirement

3-Number of fruits/plot                                    4-Fruit weight (yield)

5-Labor cost and hours                                   6-Cost of production materials

7-Yield and market price

2-4: Evaluation of different strawberry varieties grown in culture media using vertical system and horizontal systems under non-cooled green-hall at Rumais, Sohar and farmers field in collaboration with ICARDA

Rational

Strawberry is considered as high value crop and it is used in many ways such as table fruit, making jam, juice etc.

Strawberry crop belonging to the family of Rosaceae (Rose) and Fragaria genus. Strawberry can be grown as a wild plant and as a cultivated plant. It is classified as a sensitive to salinity and grows well in a cool, moist climate. It can be planted in both open field and protected agriculture as well as in different types of soil less culture.

Objectives

1- To study the performance of different strawberry cultivars in vertical system.

2- To achieve high yield and quality strawberry varieties.

3- To study the efficiency of the vertical system in Farmer’s farm.
